Bass-Baritone Martin Winkler was born in Bregenz, Austria. He studied at the University of Vienna.

With his hugely successful debut as Klingsor in Wagner’s “Parsifal” 2011 in Tallinn Martin Winkler entered the Wagner opera world. He personified Klingsor in Calixto Bieitos’ production of “Parsifal” in Stuttgart in 2012/13 with Sylvain Cambreling, and had his debut as Alberich in “Der Ring des Nibelungen” at the Bayreuth Festival 2013, a new production staged by Frank Castorf and conducted by Kyrill Petrenko. After this from press and audience acclaimed debut he sang Alberich at the George Enescu Festival in Bukarest where he returned in 2015 for a production of “Wozzek”. As Klingsor in the new “Parsifal” production of Christof Loy at the Royal Opera House Stockholm, Orest in Strauss` “Elektra” in Warsaw, Graf Waldner at the Metropolitan Opera, the title role of Donizettis “Viva la Mamma” staged by Rolando Villazon and his Pizzaro debut in Vienna he could show his versatile stage talent.

Martin Winkler’s debut at the Bayerische Staatsoper Munich in Alban Berg‘s “Lulu” was in May 2015 and he returned as the fearsome Tierbändiger/Athlet in Bergs’ “Lulu” to the Metropolitan Opera in the same year. In 2015 he sang Alberich at the Opera House in Nürnberg. Martin Winkler gave his debut at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in David Pountney´s production of Carl Nielsen’s “Maskarade” and was invited again 2016 for the production of „The Nose“ staged by Barrie Kosky where he sang the title role. Martin Winkler gave his debut at Teatro Real in Madrid in 2016 in Wagners’ “Liebesverbot” and as Lautsprecher in “Kaiser von Atlantis”.

In 2011 he did perform the title role in Lea Auerbachs “Gogol” (world premiere) at the Theater an der Wien. He sang the title role in “Le Grand Macabre” by György Ligeti in Berlin. His debut at the Komische Oper Berlin turned out to be a milestone in staging of modern opera. Since then he sang Bergs’ “Wozzek” in Graz, “Eight songs for a mad King” by Peter Maxwell Davis and Simone in Zemlinskys’ “Florentine Tragedy” in Lyon, Narr in Kreneks’ “Das Geheime Königreich” (available on DVD), and sang the title roles in world premieres of operas by Lea Auerbach and Detlev Glanert. He sang in Rome and at La Monnaie, in Brussels and performed the Father in “Hänsel und Gretel” at the Prague State Opera.

Martin Winkler joined the Volksoper in Vienna in 2009, where he has sung roles such as Puccinis’ Giannis Schicchi, Dr. Bartolo in Rossinis’ “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” and Frank in Strauß’ “Die Fledermaus”. The roles of Kaspar in Webers’
„Der Freischütz“ and Kecal in Smetanas’ „Die verkaufte Braut“, and „Das Wunder der Heliane“ in 2017 helped Martin Winkler to international recognition.

He succesfully returned to Theater an der Wien, Vienna, with „Elegie für junge Liebende“ in May 2017 and “Parsifal” at the Wiener Festwochen in June 2017. In December 2017 he will sing Alberich at the Theater an der Wien as well as at the Vienna State Opera in April 2018 and at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in May 2018. In May 2018 he will be Dr. Bartolo in “Il Barbiere de Siviglia” at the Vienna State Opera. In January 2018 he will return to Lyon for Zemlinskys’ “Kreidekreis”. In the season 2018/19 he will give his debut in Dresden as Graf Waldner in “Arabella” and later as Kezal in “Die verkaufte Braut”.
